Every child is different but schools typically teach all children in the same way. The last government tried to change this by introducing diplomas, where children could get skills in much more vocational subjects such as engineering and business studies. These courses are much more hands on and better suited to the needs of some students.
The government needs to realise that every student does not want or need to go onto higher education. Instead some skills and be learnt on the job and these vocational courses are the first step towards that. Therefore if you are a student in secondary school and want a more hand son approach to teaching, then why not look into what diplomas your school can offer you.

If you’re looking for a new job then a CV is going to be the first thing your potential employer is going to see. As we all know first impressions are everything and so you need to make sure that your CV is well written and is tailored towards the job you are applying for.
The first thing you need to focus on is the structure. It needs to contain all the relevant information, such as employment history, and skills, but not be long winded, and difficult to read. There are many free examples out there on the internet, but some companies which offer career advise also offer free CV writing tips which can be very useful.
In some professions competition can be tough, and the difference between getting an interview or not can be a as little as making a spelling mistake in your CV.

No matter what age your are, it is never too late to learn, so whether you want to learn new skills or want to totally change your career, adult education courses can be just what you need. Whether you want to learn full time and enrol as a mature student university, or whether you want to fit your learning around your current job, there are lots of courses and options out there for you. When I wanted to learn new skills I was able to enrol on a free evening course at a local university, which in turn helped to get the job I’m in now. To get more information on the types of courses available to you, why not get in touch with your local university or college and see where your new skills take you.

The recession was hard for a lot of people, many took pay cuts and had to economise, but those which were hardest hit were the ones that got made redundant. Being made redundant is always going to be hard and it can seem like the end of the world, but it doesn’t have to be.

What you have to remember is that redundancy is not personal. It is the job role which has been made redundant, not you. Unfortunately most people will have to deal with redundancy at some point during their working lives but the important thing is how you react to the situation. First things first; it is important to try and stay calm and talk about your situation to family and friends. Once you have been able to take stock of the situation, look into the options available to you and get some professional careers advice and they can help you on your way.

Many people who have normal jobs sometimes switch to apprenticeships due to the money that can be gained when they’re older, as well as the benefits of the job itself. Many who become apprentices have usually had some career advice on their way (maybe due to a dislike of their current job, future bearings etc).

Parental career advice is notably different to that of advice offered by an adviser. This is due to the fact that advice from parents can be more opinionated. From our parents or family, we have a set of values that we learn and maintain (as that is the way that we believe life should be ran). A parent may believe a career would better suit their child in a given area, rather than what the child would like to learn or more than be expected of them. However, this can also be different, as a parent may have the interests of the child at heart, and realise what job would suit there child (in terms of their future and happiness etc).

Once at university and nearing the end of your course you should consider your next moves whether this is carrying on to doing a PHD or Masters or finding your first job. For me i i started looking at graduate jobs fairly early to give me a head start this does not always work but is best to make a start as earlier as you can and have some ideas on what it is you wish to do.

Since leaving university I have only had two jobs – I have friends who have lots of experience of leaving jobs where as myself I had no idea of the process. Once I made up my mind to leave my previous job, I (luckily) had a great recruitment consultant who offered the following advice on how to resign professionally:

1) Write a short and sweet letter of resignation letter
2) Thank the company for all the support and training they have given you
3) Stick to your guns – do not accept a counter offer to persuade you to stay
4) Finally, your employer may want to know the real reason why you are leaving – in this instance it is really important to be professional – you do not want to burn any bridges by saying anything too negative or immature.

Good luck with your new job!

For any new graduate or someone looking to change career, one of the most important things for their CV is relevant work experience. Getting the right type of work experience is vital, as many companies will simply ask their interns to make tea/coffee, hand out the post etc. However, it is essential that people on work experience ask their employer for more responsibility and tasks that will challenge them, giving a realistic portrayal of working life in that industry. Ensure that the tasks they give you will be transferable to your CV because at the end of the day that is the reason why you are doing it in the first place. Two weeks is regarded as the minimum amount of acceptable work experience, with a month being the standard but it can range to up to six months.

And you never know if you make the right impression on your work experience it might even land you a job at the end of it.
